St Mary’s Whitby

I hope every visitor to the Abbey makes some time to visit the parish church next door – it’s brilliant!

The church dates to the 12th century and at the time of its construction was part of the community of Prestibi – separate to Whitby itself.

You can see a lovely Norman arch behind the triple-decker pulpit! Yes triple decker!

With ear trumpets!

Just in case you couldn’t hear the sermon!

While we were there thecChristmas tree festival was on – which had some fantastic trees!

I liked the one made of books a lot!

There were some nice heirloom trees too – just an extension of passing baubles down.

Other excellent features in the church included this amazing heating system (no electricity in the church).

And this gravestone made of iron – the grave of a local engineer!

And this grave reminded me of home.
